Description Brief news and 2 colour photos of an archaeological excavation at the former Neptune shipyard at Wallsend, North Tyneside, which has uncovered 25 metres of Willington Waggonway dating from the 1780s and showing some unusual features.
Notes Features revealed include double layer wooden rails, a loop passing through a dip (for an incline or for wetting waggon wheels), and the oldest known example of 4ft 8½in gauge.
The rails and sleepers will be preserved by "Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums" (TWAM), initially at the Stephenson Railway Museum in North Tyneside.
