Features revealed include double layer wooden rails, a loop passing through a dip (for an incline or for wetting waggon wheels), and the oldest known example of 4ft 8½in gauge.
The rails and sleepers will be preserved by "Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums" (TWAM), initially at the Stephenson Railway Museum in North Tyneside. |
