This page lists drawings of old permanent way. It provides links to and details of all on-line drawings on oldpway.info.
See also the Lists Guide page for lists of drawings held by archives and libraries.
These lists of on-line and other drawings are arranged as Comparative Report drawings followed by Company drawings, arranged alphabetically for each region of the world (British Isles, Europe, India, Australia, USA and Canada). The Comparative Report drawings are from reports which compare or describe the permanent way of many different railway companies. The Company drawings show the permanent way of particular railway companies. These Company drawing lists include cross references to drawings in the Comparative Reports.
Within each list drawings are arranged in order of drawing date. Each drawing is marked with an availability status, using the following abbreviations.

GWR_1853-68_collection of Permanent Way Materials Drawings.
Between 1853 and 1868, the Great Western Railway Engineer’s Office at Paddington, London, collected a set of “Permanent Way Materials” drawings.
The GWR gave these page numbers 1 to 47 within drawing register no. 57842.
This book of drawings begins with an index which gives details of pages 1 to 34, 1853 to 1861, including the dates when the drawings were acquired by the GWR.
These drawings show designs of permanent way, including many switches and crossings (S&C), used by various railways and made by various suppliers of patented designs.
Of particular note is the use of switches with tongues of unequal length, so that the switch toes are staggered in a way that reduces derailments.
In 1853 unequal tongues were used by the South Wales Railway on the main line.
In 1864 Victorian Railways of Australia ordered 45 switches with unequal tongues and 15 switches with equal tongues.
The collection includes permanent way used by the South Wales Railway in 1853,
many patented designs of S&C used in 1857,
permanent way used at the GWR Briton Ferry Docks in 1861,
S&C of Victorian Railways of Australia in 1864,
a Llynvi Valley Railway dual gauge junction in 1865
and patented permanent way promoted by “The Permanent Way Company” in 1868.
There is evidence of companies who manufactured permanent way,
of railway engineers who designed improved permanent way (including Benjamin Burleigh, Henry Carr and Robert Richardson),
of “The Permanent Way Company” who acted for patentees,
of “Messrs Thomson & Browning” who were Engineering Agents for many manufacturers,
and of some lithographers who printed the drawings.
These drawings are now in the Network Rail Corporate Archive (NRCA) “Historical Engineering Collection”.
They are online for viewing and downloading.
Local copies of the downloadable limited resolution images are provided here on oldpway.info at “View” in the Link column.
Better images and all NRCA information (some of which is inaccurate) can be seen on the NRCA website at the link given by the NRCA reference number in the Source column.
The NRCA images include a size and colour calibration chart, from which the original size of the drawing can be checked.
The dates listed are those given on the GWR index page.
In the Rail column, “BG” = Broad Gauge (7ft 0 1/4in), “Br” = “Bridge Rail”, “Br nn” = “Bridge Rail no. nn”, “DH” = Double Headed, “FB” = Flat Bottom.

The drawings show the plain line permanent way
(mostly rail joint, fishplate, rail section, chair, fixings, sleeper spacing and formation) used by a number of British, Colonial and USA railways.
Rails are bull head (BH) except where noted as flat bottomed (FB).
Fishplates are normal (extends between head and foot of rail),
or wide (extends out and down to bottom of foot of rail),
or wrapping (extends down and round under foot of rail),
or deep (extends below foot of rail).

1905 REA Standardization of Permanent Way Rail Joints.
53 watercoloured drawings from
Ross_1905,
"Railway Engineers' Association. Standardization of Permanent Way Rail Joints",
by Alexander Ross.
This is the first report (dated 2 June 1905)
prepared for the REA committee that had been set up on 27 January 1905 to consider standardization of permanent way rail joints.
The drawings show
the joints, fishplates and chairs in use by many British railway companies in 1905.
They also show some joints being used experimentally, joints suggested by inventors
and joints suggested for the new (1904) British Standard ("BS") rails.
There is a lot of useful information on drawing 2,
which is a summary of the design details of the joints used by the companies who contributed to the report.
All the rails are bull head except on the Midland Great Western Railway of Ireland drawing 50 which is flat bottomed (FB).

The Signal and Telegraph Department of the heritage Great Central Railway at Loughborough
has a set of MS&LR and GCR "Type Drawings".
These show details of infrastructure to be used on the MS&LR's London Extension.
They were issued to contractors building the line to ensure that the company's standard designs were used.
The original drawings are in the GCR museum at Loughborough.
Scans of most of the drawings are on-line on the www.swithland-signal-works.co.uk website.
Some are not yet on-line.
The complete hGCR drawings list with links to view them is on-line at
www.swithland-signal-works.co.uk/plans/plans.html,
with a local oldpway copy here.
Note that the Type Drawings include drawings of fences, platforms, buildings, water columns and other items,
which are outside the scope of the oldpway website, so they are included in these complete lists of drawings but not in the list below.
The Type Drawings which are of permanent way and related items are included in the following list,
with the source column giving a link to the GCR on-line jpeg drawing, "View" giving a link to an oldpway local pdf copy for convenience,
and [NYO] indicating that the drawing has not yet been put on-line by the GCR S&T Department.
Most drawings are about 1.5MB.
Use the "View" links below to get pdf files from oldpway.
Use the source links below or the links in the complete drawings lists to get jpegs from swithland-signal-works.

Spike diameters from top to bottom are 11/2", 11/16", 15/16", 15/16", 3/4". A pencilled note says that the sleeper centres scale 2’ – 6". |
